Each diamond is unique and unrepeatable, as unique and unrepeatable is the time to give or buy it. In Quera we have been diamond specialists for over 130 years, we work with the main international gemological institutes to offer official certification and the best quality, advice and price.

THE DIAMONDS

Each diamond is unique. No gemstone can be compared to diamonds. It is found in the most remote places on earth and the mere fact that it can be created is already a miracle. It takes practically a ton of rock and a multitude of geological variables to get less than half a carat of a rough diamond. Diamonds are formed under conditions of high pressure and extreme temperature, at depths of more than 140 kilometers within the Earth's mantle, and reach the surface through vents caused by volcanic eruptions. A rough diamond is generally in the shape of an octahedron, like two pyramids joined at the base with four facets each.

Diamond is the hardest stone that exists. Its name comes from the Greek "Adamas" which means invincible, unalterable, indomitable. Among other things, that is why it is called to be a "forever" stone.

THE 4 C

Being a natural phenomenon each diamond is unique. Diamonds are made in many sizes, shapes, colors and with various internal characteristics. The value of one or the other is based on a combination of factors. There is a systematic and internationally agreed way among jewelery professionals to evaluate these factors developed by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America). This scale establishes the use of four factors known in English as 4C: Cut, Color, Clarity & Carat.

CLARITY / PURITY

Because diamonds are formed inside the earth at high temperatures, sometimes there are particles of other minerals remaining inside, which is what we call inclusions. The gem has more quality when these inclusions are less visible.

There is a table to evaluate the purity of diamonds. It has 11 degrees of clarity, which from low to high would be:

F, IF, vvs1, vvs2, vs1, vs2, si1, si2, i1, i2, i3.

Many inclusions and defects are too small to be seen by anyone other than a trained and formatted diamond grader. At first glance, a VS1 and an SI2 diamond may look exactly the same, but these diamonds are quite different in terms of overall quality. This is why expert and accurate evaluation of clarity is extremely important.

CUT

The quality of the cut is crucial to the beauty and final value of the diamond. Each angle and each facet affects the amount of light that returns to the human eye.

The most common diamond shape used in jewelry is the round, which we call glitter. A well-cut shine should have 58 facets (57 excluding the butt), regardless of size.
The cut is evaluated with a table with 5 levels: Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor.

All other diamond shapes are known as fantasy shapes. Depending on the way the diamond is cut it takes different names. If it is rectangular it is called a baguette, if it is a square princess, in the shape of a heart, a pear ...

THE WEIGHT

The weight of the glitter is measured in a unit called carat and is directly related to the size of the stone. 1 carat (ct) = 6.5 mm in diameter.

Value, however, is not strictly proportionate to its weight. The concept is simple, large diamonds are rarer than small ones. The scarcer something is, the more valuable it is. So a larger stone not only costs more for the carats it has, but the percentage per carat is higher. A 1 carat diamond weighs the same as four 0.25 carat diamonds. But even if the other quality factors are the same, the larger diamond is worth much more than the sum of the four smaller diamonds.

Each carat can be subdivided into 100 points. This allows for very accurate measurements.

THE COLOUR

The most valued color is non-colour. The closer a colourless diamond is, the greater its value. Despite the fact that we are most accustomed to seeing them, colorless diamonds are extremely rare. The color in diamonds is caused by impurities and structural defects in their formation. We find yellow, brown, black, orange, pink, blue ...

Leading diamond certification institutes, colour gradients with a table ranging from "D" to "Z". Each letter represents a range of colours based on the tone and saturation of a diamond. The "D" is the highest expression in the range of white and colorless, while the "Z" is when the diamond has a very marked color, which also makes it valuable for its rarity. Intermediate terms are the most common.

CERTIFICATION

Buying a diamond must be a rigorous, thoughtful, objectionable and evaluated decision by accredited professionals. The value of diamonds depends on the combination of several tangible and valuable variables. Super deals, promotions or bargains do not exist on high quality diamonds. Fear of diamonds sold by unknown platforms or jewelers without official training or certification. Also doubt their own or third-party certifications that they cannot verify are officially made by the world's three major gemological institutes: GIA, HRD and IGI.
